A message of sympathy to St Alban’s Church

3 Nov 2026

The Chapel Committee of Cairo Street Unitarian Chapel extends its heartfelt sympathy to the congregation of St Alban’s Roman Catholic Church in Bewsey following the damage to its war memorial.

We are deeply saddened that a memorial honouring those who gave their lives in war has been vandalised. We also recognise the distress this has caused to the parish and the wider community.

Canon Christopher Cunningham described the figure’s head as having been “knocked off” and the incident as “true persecution”. Cheshire Police are investigating the damage as a possible hate crime.

As neighbours and people of faith, we believe our communities should work together to build understanding, respect and peace.

The sacrifices of the women and men who died in the First and Second World Wars, and in all wars, deserve to be honoured through our commitment to the peace for which they so valiantly fought.

We stand in sympathy with the congregation of St Alban’s and hope that care, solidarity and mutual respect will guide our community in the days ahead.
